Istradefylline is a selective adenosine A 2A receptor inhibitor.[A184064,A184067] These receptors are found in the basal ganglia, a region of the brain that suffers degeneration in Parkinson's disease, and is also significantly involved in motor control.[A184067] A 2A receptors are also expressed on GABAergic medium spiny neurons within the indirect striato-pallidal pathway.[L8225] The Istradefylline (KW-6002) is suspended in 0.3% Tween-80 and 10% sucrose solution and administered in a final volume of 2.0 mL/kg body weight by oral gavage.
